MAJOR INVESTMENT PLANS GET UNDERWAY AT BLACKPOOL INTERNATIONAL

Blackpool International announced today the first phase of major investment plans  in the airport's infrastructure since the launch of the ADF on 5th January 2009.  A £1m project to upgrade the existing runway and taxi-way facilities will be undertaken by the Colas Group.   The work will benefit both airlines and passengers alike as the airport will be able to provide facilities for aircraft that can go further afield to destinations within the eastern and southern Mediterranean.

David Kershaw, chief executive officer at Blackpool International said: "The provision of such facilities reflects the level of investment being committed to the development of Blackpool International from the airport itself and from the introduction of the ADF.  We have already undertaken other infrastructure improvements including aircraft parking works and enhancements such as carpeting the arrivals halls and are about to embark upon a programme of activity to upgrade and extend our car parking facilities to accommodate the extra demand from passengers using our free passenger parking."

As part of the airport's plans to increase aircraft capacity at the airport, the runway and taxiway works will commence on 23rd February and will take up to 5 weeks to complete. A total of 250,000 sq ft of new surface will be laid using 3500 tonnes of asphalt.  All of the works will be undertaken during the night starting at 2100 when the airport closes, and the runway will return to service ready for the first flights in and out at 0600.

David Kershaw added: "We are committed at Blackpool to the provision of high quality services and facilities to our passengers and airline customers.  We certainly recognise and appreciate the support we receive and know that it is essential if we are to move forward.

"I am certain that with continued investment by the airport and with assistance from funds collected by the ADF, the airport is on a great  footing for future success."
